A little context...

Amidst the challenges of 2020, exacerbated by rising stress levels, I authored this book as a mental health guide, aiming to promote self-care during the pandemic and beyond, drawing on my qualifications in mental health first aid.

CHAPTER 1: WHY SO STRESSED?

Whether we are in the middle of a pandemic together or the middle of a stressful activity in our own homes, we all face testing times and go through some difficult stages in our lives. The developments in technology, social media, and more have provided us with benefits beyond our wildest dreams but along with that has come more complications compared to that of our ancestors. Still, do you ever see how certain people act and wonder, “How do they have it all together?” or “Why do I crack under the pressure and they don’t?” or “Why can’t I have the same amount of hours in the day as Yoncé?” My friend and I are slowly figuring that last one out, but a reason why others do well or at least appear to do so is usually because of their approach to stressful situations and the coping strategies and tools they use.

As a generation, we are generally more stressed and it increases just like the number of people in debt, the number of people who lose their jobs or their homes or their sanity. For many people, depression, anxiety, worry, and stress are part of their everyday lives.

We are in a new age – the Age of Anxiety and according to The Times; anxiety has now become an epidemic for young people with numbers rocketing within the group due to exam pressures, uncertain career plans, and further education worries. They have not yet seen the full force of life’s uncertainties in play in the 21st century that causes many people to live in a state of worry and fear...
